The annual 'Heritage' ranking analyzes the cultural and historical wealth of 78 countries around the world, a study carried out by BAV Group and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
How the index is measured
The index that measures the heritage of each country includes seventy-six different metrics, although it fundamentally has five essential aspects: the accessibility of the country's culture, a rich history, cultural attractions, good food, and geographic attractions.
This means it measures the beauty of the landscape, the richness and complexity of history, but also the ease of accessing it. Tourism and openness to foreigners has a lot to do with it.
Why Mexico ranks fifth
Mexico occupies the fifth place. It stands out for having a mixture of a great cultural past with civilizations such as the Mayan, the Aztec, the Olmec or the Toltec, as well as impressive natural landscapes among which the tropical forests stand out, and one of the best gastronomic offers in the world.
It is not surprising that the first countries that appear on the list are also those that receive the most travelers each year. The leaders in this case are Italy, Spain and France, followed by the United States and China. Thailand and Turkey are also among the most visited countries in the world. The case of Thailand is very similar to that of Mexico, combining pleasure, exotic beauty and cultural heritage.
