Quintana Roo continues to lead the national tourism market in Mexico, drawing record numbers of domestic travelers and outperforming top international destinations. The state's appeal is also evolving, as Cancun and Playa del Carmen diversify well beyond sun and beach to attract a broader audience.
Cancun and Playa del Carmen lead summer 2019
This summer, Quintana Roo is considered the preferred destination of national tourism, a segment that grew 5 percent in the first half of the year. Cancun's international airport received four million 219 thousand national travelers, 186 thousand 545 more than in the same period of 2018.
Cancun leads the national tourism market among the 20 preferred destinations for vacationing this summer, and Playa del Carmen is at site number 5, according to Best Day Travel Group, one of the most important travel companies in Latin America.
Where domestic travelers are coming from
The Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV) details that seven out of 10 national tourists chose Cancun as a holiday destination this season, mainly from the cities of Guadalajara and Mexico City. Until May, the influx of passengers from the country's capital had reached two million 16 thousand 833, according to the Air Transport Association of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Both Cancun and Playa del Carmen outperform foreign destinations such as Orlando, Las Vegas and Punta Cana in preference to national tourists, and in Mexico cities like San Jose del Cabo in Baja California Sur.
Diversifying beyond sun and beach
The state also informs sargassum tourism, which affects not only Quintana Roo but other states and countries. With the diversification of tourism products beyond the offer of sun and beaches, the state attracts a greater percentage of tourists every year.
The report issued by the Business Intelligence area of Best Day indicates, for example, that the best tours to enjoy the summer of 2019 were Xcaret Park in the Riviera Maya and Captain Hook / Pirate Ship in Cancun.
How travelers booked their trips
According to Best Day's data, of all reservations made with the company this year:
- 50 percent was made through the online platform
- 58 percent included hotel reservations
- 26 percent included plane tickets
- 26 percent were reservations for family trips

In summary
Quintana Roo's leadership in domestic tourism reflects strong demand from key Mexican cities, a growing online booking culture, and a destination mix that now spans natural attractions, family experiences, and iconic theme parks alongside the region's signature beaches.
