Top 5 of the Best Cenotes in the Riviera Maya

Now that you know what traveling brings to your life, we invite you to know and enjoy the Riviera Maya to the fullest. Discover our top 5 selection of natural cenotes, visit them — and fall in love with this wonderful place.

1. Dos Ojos Cenote

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and extravagant sites in Yucatán, and one of the largest underwater cenote systems in the Riviera. Its name comes from the two sinkholes that form it — approximately 70 meters in diameter each — connected by a 400-meter-long corridor.

It contains the deepest known underwater cave passage: 118 meters deep. Snorkeling and diving give you visibility to appreciate different species in clear water.

Entrance fee: 200 pesos (~$14 USD).

2. Escondido Cenote

One of the favorites — hidden among the majestic and imposing jungle of Tulum, completely surrounded by nature. Refreshing yourself in its crystalline waters is incredible. Ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Located just 3 km from the south exit of Tulum.

This cenote is a large and deep pool with stone cliffs of 2 to 4 meters from which you can jump into the water. It also has underwater caves to explore.

Entrance fee: $4 USD.

3. Sac Actun Cenote

Sac Actun is actually a subterranean cave system with an approximate length of 347.7 km — making it the longest in Mexico. Since it was discovered there's a connection to the Dos Ojos system, it became the largest underwater cave system in the world.

Located on the Federal Highway, past Xelhá and just one kilometer from Tulum, it's an excellent option for diving. If you like adventure, you can't miss it.

Entrance fee: 350 pesos.

4. Gran Cenote

This spectacular cenote is an excellent option if you're in Tulum — only a couple of kilometers away — and one of the most famous and beloved cenotes in Mexico. Perfect for snorkeling: the water is so clear and crystalline that you can see much of the underwater life without diving deep.

Entrance fee: $25 USD.

5. Cenote Azul (Bacalar)

Located right at the entrance of Bacalar, one of the most beautiful magical towns of the Riviera Maya, just 30 minutes from Chetumal. It offers the mystical beauty of the great cenotes.

An open cenote with a diameter of approximately 200 meters and a depth of 90 meters. Dive into its cold waters, surface, and look around for an unparalleled view. A must for divers — a real challenge due to its depth.

In summary

From the deep dive challenge of Sac Actun to the postcard transparency of Gran Cenote, the Riviera Maya offers a cenote for every skill level and every mood. Each one is a different angle on the same underground world that gave the region its identity.
