Top 6 Incredible Beaches to Visit in Playa del Carmen

Hands up if you come to Playa del Carmen for the incredible museum culture… anyone? Ok, hands up if you came on a very important business trip… still nobody? Yes, we know why you're here: the beautiful turquoise beaches, lined with palm trees and white sand.

You have plenty of options among the picturesque beaches of Playa del Carmen. Everyone has a different favorite for very different reasons. If you're sitting there with your beach towel and sunscreen ready but not sure which direction to go, check out this guide.

1. Parque Fundadores

This is probably the most iconic beach in Playa del Carmen. Just walk along Juárez until you reach 5th Avenue and you'll see the gigantic Playa del Carmen Arch right in front of you. Here you'll find a true mix of people, from tourists to local families.

As it's so well known, the area can be quite busy and a bit noisy. However, since it's the widest beach in Playa del Carmen, there's room for all those extra towels and sunbeds while still having nice, quiet spaces to relax.

The most unusual thing about this stretch is that there are no beach clubs, so you get a real sense of community with everyone spread across the sand. If you get hungry after an afternoon in the sun, there are plenty of bars and restaurants at Parque Fundadores.

2. Playa Calle 10

There's really nothing special about the sand or the sea here, but the abundant beach clubs are what make this beach so special. Visit Lido, a modern and affordable beach club, listen to live music at Zenzi, enjoy delicious seafood at El Pirata, or simply rest on the white sands.

Due to the abundance of beach clubs, the public parts of the beach are usually quite empty and quiet. Calle 10 attracts both locals and tourists but maintains a very relaxed tropical atmosphere throughout the day.

3. Playa Mamitas

There are more humans than grains of sand on this beach, but it will always be the most famous of all Playa del Carmen beaches. If you're looking for a peaceful experience, this may not be your spot. But if you want energy, drinks, and electronic music, this is your mecca.

Between Kool and Mamitas, this beach is definitely party central. DJs play all day, drinks flow freely, and there are plenty of sunbeds. Mamitas was recently refurbished and now features a refreshing pool to cool off.

4. Playa Playacar

A personal favorite. It's part of a residential area, so it's quiet, clean, with no rocks hidden under the waves. This stretch of bright white sand is generally better maintained than other public beaches — algae is rarely a problem since it gets cleaned early.

The sea here always seems a little clearer and a little bluer than near downtown Playa del Carmen. The beach is dotted with palm trees offering much-needed shade throughout the day. But arrive early — the locals know this little trick.

5. Coco Reef

Once upon a time, Canibal Royal had one of the most beautiful and exclusive beaches. However, a sad combination of weather and erosion has almost completely destroyed that area. But heading toward 48th Street, you'll discover a little gem — the only beach in Playa del Carmen you can describe as isolated.

No restaurants, no beach clubs, no bars. Just the sound of waves hitting the shore and birds singing in the nearby jungle. Coco Reef is also the best place for snorkeling in Playa. Make sure to bring your snorkel and fins!

6. Playa Calle 2

This wide stretch of sand is home to some of the most beloved beach clubs in Playa del Carmen, like Lido. Access is very easy, and the beach is at the perfect distance from the noisy ferry terminal.

This beach tends to be more 'westernized,' where you'll meet many expats and tourists from the US and Canada. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, with daily horseshoe and racquetball games, and live country music that'll leave you in a state of complete relaxation.

In summary

Playa del Carmen offers six very different beach experiences: from the lively Mamitas to the secluded Coco Reef, the family-friendly Parque Fundadores, and the exclusive Playacar. Whatever your style, there's a beach waiting for you.
