Traveling is One of the Keys to Happiness!

One of the activities we enjoy most today is traveling. Many people will disagree — they think it's an unnecessary expense, that it would be better to save for material things like a car or new clothes. But giving ourselves the opportunity to see new places, gather experiences and learn about other cultures will make us much happier in the long run.

According to several scientific studies, traveling brings happiness. We often confuse the immediate pleasure of buying a material good — which fades within hours or days — with lasting fulfillment. What truly stays in our memory and makes life happier is acquiring new experiences. Here are five empirical reasons why.

1. Forget about routine

Traveling takes you away from your daily routine, the stress of everyday life, work, chores and pending tasks. It lets your brain relax and enjoy emotions different from what it's used to.

You can do small things to break the routine — going out with friends, taking a different route to work — but they don't deliver the same happiness as a trip.

2. Renew your emotions

The thrill of getting to know new places, tasting other flavors, meeting new cultures, making new friends — traveling itself is an adventure. It doesn't matter if it's in your own city or in another country; behind every trip there are unforgettable memories.

3. Gain confidence in yourself

When we travel, we often face unforeseen events or obstacles that push us out of our comfort zone. Handling them gives us experience and we return home more confident — feeling stronger and able to solve problems more easily.

As foreigners we often have to adapt to other climates, other cultures, other ways of thinking — and that ultimately makes us more tolerant and adaptable to change.

4. Create new stories

After a great trip we love to share anecdotes, videos and photos of the places we visited — and that brings far more pride than showing friends a new car, new clothes or new furniture.

If something good happens to you, travel to celebrate. If something bad happens to you, travel to forget. If nothing happens to you, travel — so that something happens to you.

In summary

Science shows that, in the long run, traveling makes you much happier than that brand-name clothing or luxury car you intended to buy. So next time someone tells you you're wasting money on vacations, remember: traveling isn't a waste of money — it's an investment in your happiness.
